Becoming a CNA in Virginia

Certified nursing assistants are in high demand around the country, and the job market for the career in Virginia seems quite promising. It is one of the fastest growing jobs in the country, and that means it could be a perfect solution for someone in the Old Dominion State. If you have been thinking about the healthcare field, this entry-level position could be a perfect fit. The average annual salary is 23k, and the jobs often come with decent benefits. It is a great first position in the healthcare field, and it just takes some training to get ready to enter the job market.

Requirements for Virginia CNAs

The Virginia Department of Health and the Board of Nursing regulate the training in the state and ensure that the programs meet or exceed their minimums. The program that you choose will have at least 120 hours of training. The training time is going to split between classroom study and clinical experience. You will find that this is much higher than the federal minimums, which is good, as it gives students a much better grasp of the job. Virginia also has some continuing education courses that you can take to expand your earning potential.

The cost of the classes will vary, but reimbursement for CNA courses is often available at a federal level as long as you have a job in the field before, during, or after training. One of the things that are not reimbursable is the cost of your scrubs. You will need these for your training and for your job. Fortunately, they are quite affordable. Some employers may even provide the scrubs or an allowance for them.

You should be able to find CNA classes in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Arlington, and other locations throughout VA. Employment is going to be available throughout the state as well.

CNA Registration and License in VA

Pearson Vue will be the company that provides the testing for CNAs in the state of Virginia. The company provides tests that have two different parts, a multiple-choice written exam, which is also available orally, and a skills exam. During the skills exam, you are going to need to demonstrate the abilities that you learned while in training. The cost is $96. Once you pass, you will be on the state registry. Renew your license every two years. You will have to provide proof that you worked at least 8 hours as a CNA during those two years to renew your certification.

Why Become a CNA in Virginia?

The demand for CNAs is on the rise in the state thanks to the aging population. They are living longer, which is wonderful, but they need to have caregivers who are trained and competent. This is where you appear. Having a job that lets you help and care for others is great for those who have compassionate personalities. The job of CNA makes a great first step toward other healthcare careers as well, and it could be a good idea for those who eventually want to consider nursing.
